Hamilton Hashman

From Lowell, Ohio History

I'm of German (mainly), English, Irish, Native American (Oneida, Blackfoot, Sioux, Kispoko, Mohawk, and Shawnee), Scottish, French, Welsh, Dutch, Swiss, Italian, Royal/Noble, Belgian, Danish, Austrian, Spanish, and Jewish ancestry. The royal/noble ancestry includes: Armenian, Austrian, Basque, Belarusian, Belgian, Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Georgian, Greek, Hungarian, Iranian, Irish, Italian, Luxembourgian, Macedonian, Montenegrin, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Saudi Arabian, Scottish, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish, Swiss, Syrian, Turkish/Turkic, Ukrainian, and Welsh.

My immigrant ancestors came to America between 1620 and 1854 from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Italy, Denmark, Spain, and Switzerland. First settling in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Before eventually settling in Southeastern Ohio and Northern West Virginia, including (but not limited to): Washington, Morgan, Monroe, Noble, Belmont, Tuscarawas, Guernsey, Muskingum, Perry, Athens, Hocking, Vinton, Meigs, Gallia, Jackson, Lawrence, and Scioto Counties in Ohio; and Wood, Wirt, Ritchie, Pleasants, Tyler, Wetzel, and Monongalia Counties in West Virginia.

My earliest immigrant ancestor is my paternal 11th Great Grandfather, Capt. John Thomas Clay, who arrived in Jamestown, Virginia from England in February 1613 on the ship Treasurer. My most recent immigrant ancestors are my paternal 5th Great Grandparents, Johann Peter and Katharina (Zimmer) Pfaff, who arrived in New York City, New York from Germany on 5 Jun 1854 on the ship Cumberland. In addition, my maternal 11th Great Grandfather, Pergerine White, was the first known non-hispanic white male to be born in America and the first child born to the Pilgrams. His birth (in 1620) comes after Martín de Argüelles, Jr. (born 1566 to Spanish parents) and Virginia Dare (born 1587 to English parents). His parents (and my maternal 12th Great Grandparents), William and Susanna (Fuller) White, immigrated to America on the Mayflower.

My ancestors have served in nearly every major war, including: the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World War II. In addition, I have aunts, uncles and cousins who have served in the aforementioned wars, and also served in World War I, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the War on Terror. My ancestors also fought in the Battle of Dunbar, the War of the Regulation, the Battle of Salamanca, and the Battle of Point Pleasant, among others.

My ancestors have come from various economic (from wealthy to poor) and religious backgrounds. My ancestors religious beliefs have included: Christianity (Episcopal, Presbyterian, Baptist, Quaker, Methodist, Moravian, Lutheran, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Mennonite, Church of Christ, United Brethren, and Armenian Apostolic), Judaism, Islam, Paganism, Polytheism, and Zoroastrianism. In addition, I have a number of ancestors that were pastors, including my Maternal 10th Great Grandfather Rev. Anthony Jacob Henkel, who helped organize some of the first Lutheran Churches in America. Many of his descendants were also pastors.

My ancestors received various levels of education, from no education at all to extensive higher education. My Paternal 10th Great Grandfather, Dr. James Beall, held a PhD in Divinity from the University of Glasgow. My Paternal 10th Great Grandfather, Dr. Johann Spindler, was a Philologist and Professor at the Gymnasium Casimirianum in Coburg, Germany from 1626 to 1664. His main subject was Logic, but he also taught Physics, Mathematics, and Oriental Languages (including Hebrew).

My ancestors have held various public offices, including: Justice of the Peace, Sheriff, Township Trustee, Deputy Surveyor, Representative in the House of Burgesses, Member of General Assembly, Mayor, and Governor. In addition, my ancestors have held various political beliefs, including support for the Democratic, Republican, Whig, Democratic-Republican, and Federalist parties. My Paternal 6th Great Grandfather, Moses DeLancey, cast the first Whig vote that was ever cast in Jackson Township, Noble County, Ohio. My Paternal 6th Great Grandfather, Thomas Brookover, voted for Thomas Jefferson in the 1796 Presidential Election.

Through my maternal 22nd Great Grandparents, Joan of Acre, daughter of Edward I of England and Eleanor of Castile, and Gilbert de Clare, son of Richard de Clare and Maud de Lacy; and my maternal 18th Great Grandparents, John Beaufort, son of John of Gaunt and Katherine Roet, and Margaret Holland, daughter of Thomas Holland and Alice FitzAlan, I descend from large number of royal and noble families of Europe and the Middle East, including: the House of Wessex, the House of Plantagenet, the House of Normandy, the House of Capet, the House of Poitiers, the House of Árpád, the House of Piast, the Rurik Dynasty, the House of Dunkeld, and the House of Munsö.

Notes: Danish: It is probable that Claes Bording was Danish. Italian: There is debate over Isabelah Sivelo. Family stories claim that she immigrated from Germany and was of Italian ancestry. It possible that Sivelo is her middle name. There is a record which confirms that Sivelo is in her name somewhere. The name Sivelo is found in Italy and Spain. Turkish: An ancestor, likely from the 16th, 17th or 18th Century, on the Stallings side was of Turkish ancestry.
